Nepal's Youth Confront the Cost of Debt

From left: Gajendra Budhathoki, Editor-in-Chief, Taksar Magazine; Dr. Kalpana Khanal, Policy Research Institute; and Devendra Singh, Program Development Manager, ActionAid International Nepal.

Watch a recap of the dialogue on NTV News.

As part of AHF’s ongoing Freedom from Debt campaign, AHF Nepal, in collaboration with Youth Initiative, recently united youth, economists, journalists, and other stakeholders in Lalitpur for “Debt, Development and Us: Youth Dialogue on Nepal’s Public Debt,” exploring how borrowing decisions could affect economic opportunities and essential services for future generations.

The main session, “Voices Behind the Debt,” brought together experts representing economic, development, media, and youth perspectives. The panel dissected the relationship between public debt and young people’s economic opportunities, including Nepal’s limited employment options and growing dependence on foreign employment.

Participants also examined how debt repayment obligations could affect essential public services such as health and education.

Sadhana Guragain of Youth Initiative speaks during the event.

“It was valuable to have young people directly engage with economists and other experts. The opportunity to ask questions and share our concerns made the session more meaningful,” said Sampanna Basnet, an event participant.

By creating space for young people to engage in these discussions, AHF Nepal highlighted the importance of ensuring that today’s debt and development decisions do not come at the expense of the next generation.

AHF Nepal's program was launched in 2009. Today, the program serves more than 16,000 clients.

Building Stronger Pathways to Care

The following story, written by Diana Shpak, AHF Europe Knowledge Management Focal Point, is a special feature on AHF partner Fundacja HelpNowHUB in Poland, a recipient of the AHF Partnership Fund.

AHF partner, Fundacja HelpNowHUB, empowers women through a dance workshop.

Hanna Ariabińska, President of Fundacja HelpNowHUB, shares why grant support matters for organizations working with vulnerable communities. Through Fundacja HelpNowHUB’s experience, Hanna shows how targeted support can become a lifeline, helping expand care, strengthen outreach, and reach people who need support the most.

Fundacja HelpNowHUB is a non-governmental organization that was registered in Poland in October 2023. It was founded by Ukrainian refugee women living with HIV, many of whom came to Poland with their children after the war began. The organization helps Ukrainian refugees, people living with HIV, women affected by war, people with disabilities, and youth navigate healthcare, social services, and daily life in Poland. Their team has walked this path themselves, and they meet people with trust and real understanding.

Program participants attend a WENDŌ empowerment and self-defense training, which was developed for women and girls.

Fundacja HelpNowHUB provides online consultations throughout Poland and worldwide. In Bydgoszcz, Białystok, Warsaw, Gdańsk, Wrocław and Kraków, in-person (offline) client support is also available.

With support from the AHF Partnership Fund, Fundacja HelpNowHUB helped people affected by war and migration continue accessing treatment, care and essential support.

The AHF Partnership Fund’s grant made it possible to provide peer-to-peer counseling for people living with HIV and key populations, organize WENDŌ empowerment and self-defense trainings for migrant women, and bring mobile HIV/STI testing closer to people facing the greatest barriers, including people with disabilities, limited mobility and hidden communities.

Taking Care beyond Clinics in Malawi

Condoms were distributed throughout the Chiuzira community to support HIV and STI prevention.

On Aug. 7, AHF Malawi and local health and community partners held an integrated HIV, STI, and reproductive health outreach event in Chiuzira, Lilongwe, bringing services directly to the community to close access gaps and reduce barriers to care, including stigma and long travel times.

Community members line up to receive testing services through a mobile testing unit.

A team of health workers and community volunteers provided free HIV and STI testing, treatment, family planning, and condom education. Throughout the event, more than 6,200 condoms and nearly 850 HIV self-test kits were distributed to participants, while more than 300 people were screened for STIs.

The involvement of community volunteers helped reduce stigma around condom use and strengthen referral links between community members and health services.

Since launching the programming in 2019, AHF Malawi has grown to serve more than 56,000 clients.
