Death on Europe’s Doorstep

The patient expired, gasping for air as her pulse dropped to zero while two medical workers craned over her feverishly, trying to save her from COVID-19. This too real scene, which plays out countless times in emergency medical departments worldwide was a dramatic performance Vaccinate Our World (VOW) activists staged on October 12 in front of offices of the Delegation of the European Union to Ukraine in Kyiv.

AIDS Healthcare Foundation (AHF) Ukraine organized the art performance as part of the final VOW advocacy push ahead of the Rome G20 Summit convening at the end of October. Actors delivered a convincing portrayal to urge leaders of the wealthiest countries to use their annual meeting to demand that vaccine makers share their know-how and commit to real action and Vaccinate Our World.

“Despite the shocking number of worldwide deaths the pandemic has caused, G20 leaders and pharmaceutical companies have so far refused to do what is required to ensure all countries, not just the rich, have access to vaccines,” said Dr. Yaroslava Lopatina, Country Program Director for AHF Ukraine. “This event illustrated the problem through artistic performance and served as a wake-up call for heads of state meeting in Rome this month. We have demonstrated what doctors and patients have to deal with daily and how unfair their struggle against the novel coronavirus is without adequate numbers of vaccines.”

The Kyiv demonstration was one of several events VOW advocates are conducting across Europe this month, including a protest at the International Justice Court in The Hague yesterday and upcoming actions in Belgium, the UK, and Georgia.

You can join the fight to Vaccinate Our World by visiting the VOW website and pledging as an individual or organization to ensure G20 leaders do everything necessary to get lifesaving vaccines where they’re needed most!
